NATION-NOW Who disabled Trump’s personal account? A Twitter employee on their last day
Trump's Twitter went down. And people lost
Twitter users praised the employee who suspended President Donald Trump's account on Thursday, with some even recommending the individual for the Nobel Peace Prize.
"The account was down for 11 minutes, and has since been restored", the statement said, promising to "take steps to prevent this from happening again".
Two hours later, Twitter acknowledged the shut-down wasn't an accident.
But by 7 p.m., Twitter had learned that a customer support employee, on their last day of work, pulled the stunt.
Facebook and Twitter had spent much of the early part of this week testifying in congressional hearings about how they planned to hire more people to help prohibit the misuse of their platforms.
Lawyers for the institute and individual plaintiffs cited several instances when courts have described Trump's tweets in their rulings and described how they influenced legal conclusions.
A company representative declined to answer questions including how many employees can suspend an account or what special protections there are for high-profile users like Trump.
Why did Trump's Twitter account just disappear for 15 minutes?
Twitter took responsibility for the outage.
A Twitter spokeswoman referred to the company's earlier remarks, noting it is conducting an internal investigation into the matter. The statements made in the personal account, repeatedly violated the Protocol of the President of the United States, ahead of press briefings and statements by other officials. "I guess the word must finally be getting out - and having an impact".
And while the former employee still hasn't stepped forward or been named, The New York Times reported Friday that the person was not full time and was a customer support contractor at Twitter.
Trump's twitter account has 41.7 million followers, making him one of the influential characters on Twitter. Trump did not react to the temporary account removal until almost 12 hours later.
