As it is calculated by the real cost of living, the "real" living wage is consistently higher in London than it is elsewhere in the United Kingdom - great news for anyone paying a grand a month for a cupboard in Zone 4.

The low-priced supermarket said that it would be increasing entry-level wages from £8.45 to £8.75 per hour outside of London and £9.75 to £10.20 within the M25, in-line with the increase in living wage announced on Monday.

Workers in London - where living costs are substantially higher - will see their hourly pay boosted by 45p to £10.20 an hour.

Foundation director Katherine Chapman said: "The new living wage rates announced today will bring relief for thousands of Scottish workers being squeezed by stagnant wages and rising inflation".

In the North West 266 employers have committed to paying staff more as the rate rises.

Lidl UK has announced that it will be increasing the wages of more than 16,000 of its employees in the new year, making them the highest paid supermarket employees in the UK.

Hundreds of Lidl workers are set for a pay increase as the discount retailer pushes to pay its workers the living wage.

Northern Ireland is the worst part of the United Kingdom for wages which are deemed to be insufficient to live on, according to a new report.

Meanwhile, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also commented, "I pledged to ensure the London Living Wage rises to beyond £10 and I am delighted that has been achieved".

The wage increase is above the Government's living wage, which is set at £7.50 for employees over the age of 25 years.

A damning study has today revealed one in five Brits are now trapped in working poverty as inflation continues to outpace wage growth. Paying the London living wage is not only the action of a responsible organisation, but a successful one too.

"Extending the living wage is vital".

TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady urged more companies to sign up, adding that "many bosses are still refusing to invest in their staff". "But we need to go further - and for many more businesses and organisations to sign up".
