Grades Up Texas Tech Athletes Earn Highest Ever Graduation Success Rate

The football, baseball and men's basketball programs were all above the national average with baseball, men's swimming and diving, women's track, women's soccer, women's swimming and diving, women's basketball and gymnastics all scoring 90 or above.

"Our student-athletes strive for excellence in competition and in the classroom, and we are proud of their successes, achievements and accolades", athletics director Doug Knuth said. "Our goal is to always give our student-athletes the tools to thrive on the playing field as well as the classroom".

The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR), a four-year composite statistic for the freshman classes of 2007-08 through 2010-11, was 85 percent.

To calculate GSR, the NCAA considers whether athletes graduate within six years of entering a program.

That's the highest ever for TTU based on information released by the NCAA.

The NCAA publicly announced the Graduation Success Rate of all Division I institutions today, with George Washington student-athletes achieving a Graduation Success Rate of 94, seven percent higher than the NCAA Division I average of 87, and exceeding last year's reported mark of 93. Six teams have a 100 percent GSR: men's fencing, rifle, pistol, men's volleyball, women's tennis and women's volleyball. GSR rates that were equal to or higher than the national average for each sport were also made by the same eight programs. "The fact that they are leaving as graduates from this world class university is the strongest testament to the hard work of our student-athletes, administrators and coaches who make academics the utmost priority". Student-athletes who leave an institution while in good academic standing before exhausting athletics eligibility are removed from the cohort of their initial institution. The score has improved in all but one year since he took over - and in that one year span it didn't improve, the score stayed the same (81 in 2013 and 2014). Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students.

The GSR was developed to more accurately assess the academic performance of student-athletes. Baylor has finished either first or second in the federal graduation rate report 11 times in the league's 22-year history, produced the league's top mark in 2015, 2012, 2004, 2001, 2000, 1998 and 1996, and has graduated at least 60 percent of its student-athletes 18 times.
