The 23-year-old gymnast says she was sexually abused by Dr. Larry Nassar, who worked for USA Gymnastics for nearly 20 years. "Why not look at what about the culture?"
In July, Nassar was found guilty of receipt of child pornography, possession of child pornography and destruction and concealment of records, and he could receive between 22 and 27 years in prison when he is sentenced November 27.
Raisman, 23, is the latest member of the U.S. national team and the biggest United States gymnastics star to reveal being molested by Nassar, who is facing more than 20 counts of sexual assault.
"Why are we looking at why didn't the girls speak up?"
More than 130 women have filed lawsuits against Nassar, saying he sexually abused them as he worked with the US gymnastics team for more than two decades.
"I am angry and I'm really upset", Raisman told 60 Minutes. "These girls, they should be comfortable going to USA Gymnastics and saying 'I need help, I want therapy". The book, scheduled to release next week, will include her experiences with the alleged abuse.
She also won individual gold and silver in the floor exercise, silver in the all-around and bronze in the balance beam, making her one of the most-decorated American gymnasts of all time.
USA Gymnastics approved a new safe sport policy as a result of the recommendations made by the review.
"I was molested by Dr. Larry Nassar, the team doctor for the US Women's National Gymnastics Team, and Olympic team", Maroney wrote in the Twitter post under the #MeToo hashtag, which has remained a trending topic on social media after a number of women accused Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault in October. In a statement to 60 Minutes, USA Gymnastics said it was "very sorry that any athlete has been harmed" and that the organization wants "to work with Aly and all interested athletes to keep athletes safe". USA Gymnastics hired Kerry Perry as its new president and CEO on Tuesday after president Steve Penny resigned in March after 12 years on the job. The plaintiffs also are suing USA Gymnastics.
Raisman has been an outspoken advocate for survivors of sexual abuse.
