Taylor Swift's sixth album "Reputation" is finally out
11 November 2017, 12:53 | Erma Lawrence
Hidden flaws Taylor Swift
Instead of an array of songs potentially referencing different ex-lovers, the majority of Reputation is dedicated to a single subject, whom Swift is still (as far as fans know) happily dating.
Swift is a master at chronicling her soured relationships, with many of her finest songs memorializing (and sometimes flaming) her exes.
But while Swift's country instrumentals may be a thing of the past, her flair for storytelling shines through on the album's most engaging songs, like the delightfully dishy Getaway Car, which tells the story of her tabloid drama with Tom Hiddleston by portraying him as her hapless driver, whom she abandons after their heist.
Swift has had a back-and-forth relationship with streaming services in recent years. "Because you break them/I had to take them away/This is why we can't have nice things, honey/Did you think I wouldn't hear all the things you said about me?" The "ocean blue eyes" Swift sings about on Gorgeous nearly certainly belong to Alwyn, a motif that repeats onDancing With Our Hands Tied ("Deep blue, but you painted me golden") and Delicate ("Oh damn, never seen that color blue"). AKA you can't listen to the full album on demand, but you can listen to a radio station that plays Swift's back catalogue with songs from the new album sprinkled in.
To go along with the album release - which now is only available to listen to as a physical purchase, digital download or interspersed on an iHeartRadio stream - Swift also is selling two magazines she compiled, featuring some of her own poetry, watercolor paintings and lots of behind-the-scenes photographs of the singer filming the music videos, hanging out at home with her cats and posing for fashion photo shoots.
When "Look What You Made Me Do" dropped in August, the Internet immediately dubbed it a Kanye West diss track, which is a bit surprising since the pop star wrote on Instagram in July 2016 that she "would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009".
Then, it's West's turn.
And with that ax, T-Swift swings for the heart with a lyric about Ye's falling out with Jay Z: "But I'm not the only friend you've lost lately / Mm mmm / If only you weren't so shady". "And here's to you, 'cause forgiveness is a nice thing to do", she says, before breaking down in giggles, saying, "I can't even say it with a straight face!"
Yet, there's a key difference between Swift clowning West on Nice Things and her messaging on Look What You Made Me Do, which saw the singer regressing to the "playing the victim" role she's been criticized for throughout her career. Does that mean she'll be dropping tour dates at the end of the month?
