Why We Think EA Bought Titanfall Developer Respawn

12 November 2017, 01:54 | Camille Rivera

EA will buy Titanfall developers Respawn Entertainment in a half-billion dollar deal

New Titanfall Game Coming from Respawn

Earlier today, it was revealed that EA picked up Respawn Entertainment - developer of the Titanfall series, formed by ex-Call of Duty creators - for over $400 million Dollars.

According to a press release, EA will pay $151 million in cash and another $164 million in "long-term equity in the form of restricted stock units to employees".

As part of the announcement, EA confirmed that the three previously-announced projects are still in the works at Respawn, which are a third-person Star Wars game being overseen by God of War III director Stig Asmussen, a new entry in the Titanfall series, and an Oculus Rift-exclusive VR game now scheduled for release in 2019. Still, Respawn are a very talented bunch of developers, and if they can push against EA' practices as much as they can, they could come out of this okay. Despite EA's shaky track record when it comes to buying and maintaining game studios, Respawn is excited about what the future holds. At the time, Respawn co-founder Jason West praised how the deal was structured, telling Games Industry at the time, "the EA Partners deal really seemed like it would allow us the freedom and independence to do whatever we wanted. All games now in development are continuing as planned". Though West eventually left the studio, Zampella has remained a lead figure for the Titanfall games, which have been published by EA. News of the Respawn Star Wars video game comes on the heels of a recent announcement by EA that it had canceled an in-development high-profile game from its Visceral studios. Going forward, Zampella says Respawn will retain the same creative freedom that it has always had, only now with more resources at its disposal. In a blog post, Respawn boss Vince Zampella said it wasn't necessary to join EA, but that it made a lot of sense, given that "EA has been a great development partner".
