USGSThe earthquake struck close to Iraq's eastern border with Iran

A 7.3 magnitude quake struck northeastern Iraq and western Iran on Sunday, killing at least 12 people, according to an initial assessment reported by Iranian state television and Iraqi officials.

Large parts of Iraq have been shaken by a 7.2 magnitude quake.

The Washington Post adds that 2 more people have been reported dead thus far in Iran, and the number of dead is expected to rise as recovery operations continue. Eight villages were damaged. It says the officials also report more than 50 people were injured in Iraq's Sulaymaniyah province and about 150 were hurt in Khanaquin city.

It struck 32km (20mi) south-west of the Iraqi town of Halabja, the USGS said.

The quake-hit area is also around 200km northeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

No casualties have yet to be reported.

Witnesses said buildings being evacuated as they shook violently.

'The quake was felt in several Iranian provinces bordering Iraq. "But then I heard everyone around me screaming 'Earthquake!'"

A total of 13 people were killed in Iran and Iraq, according to the latest official statements. It destroyed the northern cities of Rudbar, Manjil, and Lushan, along with hundreds of villages, killing an estimated 37,000 people.
