However, the first recorded patents for a paper hole puncher was published by an American man named Benjamin Smith in 1885.

Single hole punches are often used to punch tickets, while multiple hole punches are often used to punch through a number of sheets of paper.

Google Doodle recently honoured Urdu author Abdul Qavi Desnavi and Himalayan explorer Nain Singh Rawat. A simple solution to keeping together documents, the hole punch became a key tool for organising papers for office workers and students alike.

"#Google #Doodle pays tribute to hole puncher on 131st anniversary! missed #ChildrensDay? asked one Twitter user".

It may be recalled that Google used to run a contest called "Doodle 4 India". Soennecken, who fittingly also introduced the ring binder, filed a patent for the hole puncher on November 14, 1886.

The doodle features every letter of "Google" except "L" created out of discarded colourful paper discs eliminated out of hole punch. Soennecken called the device "Papierlocher fur Sammelmappen", which means paper hole maker.

Friedrich Soennecken founded Soennecken, an office supplier.

A cornerstone of stationery cupboards across the globe, the hole puncher celebrates its 131st anniversary today (November 14).

He is also credited for inventing binder and a special nib for ink pens that was suitable for calligraphy. It is also used to make holes in leather and thin plastic sheets.

Google describes the hole puncher as an understated but essential artifact of German engineering.

In 1992, Bernadette Chenard, a professional paper-craft-artist who formerly used leather punches and standard hole punches to create shapes from paper, was exhausted of the sound of the hammer pounding on the paper and the difficulty in achieving professional results.
