Latest india news By-election to Jayalalithaa’s RK Nagar assembly seat on Dec 21 counting on Dec 24
The Madras High Court had directed the poll body to hold the bypoll to the Radhakrishnan Nagar seat before December 31.
The same dates have also been set for by-elections to Sikandra in Uttar Pradesh; Sabang in West Bengal; and Pakke-Kasang and Likabali in Arunachal Pradesh.
The vacancy for the constituency arose following the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on December 5 a year ago. She re-contested the seat during the state assembly polls in May 2016 but her demise by the yearend left the seat vacant and the by-poll to be held in April this year was subsequently cancelled by the Election Commission.
"We will win the bypoll with huge margin and prove that we are truly the successors of late Chief Minister and party leader J Jayalalithaa", former MP and spokesperson K C Palaniswamy told IANS. According to the Income Tax Department, the V Sasikala faction of AIADMK - which was contesting the election with TTV Dinakaran as their candidate - had allegedly paid around Rs 90 crore to gain support from voters.
Meanwhile buoyed by the EC ruling of "Two Leaves" symbol in their favour, the AIADMK legislative committee is expected to meet tomorrow at the party headquarters.
He said this will be the first election to be faced by the AIADMK government after the death of Jayalalithaa and also after it got the "two leaves" symbol.
Just after the announcement, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan and MMK leader M H Jawahirullah announced their support to the DMK candidate. Both factions had named candidates.
The constituency came into prominence after Jayalalithaa made a decision to contest the seat in June 2015 after the Karnataka high court acquitted her in the disproportionate assets case.
