Microsoft announces major expansion at Redmond campus
Microsoft has announced some major construction plans at its Redmond campus. "Overall, Microsoft said, it will add "$150 million in transportation infrastructure improvements, public spaces, sports fields and green space". Vehicle parks that sat adjacent buildings will be moved underground to provide more space for buildings and recreational ground.
"Our new campus will be more open and less formal, divided into a series of "team neighbourhoods" while capturing more natural light and fostering the type of creativity that will lead to ongoing innovation to advance the industry and benefit our customers", saidBrad Smith, Microsoft president and chief legal officer.
Smith noted that when the project concludes, there would be 131 buildings comprising 180 football fields, modern workspace to house 57,000 employees and additional space to accommodate around 8,000 more people. Microsoft is investing billions of dollars to redevelop it campus, and the company will tear down 12 old buildings to create the bigger 18 replacements. The campus will also have facilities for cricket and soccer, walking and running trails as well as retail space so that its neighbors can also enjoy it. There are also plans for a local light rail to take workers to and from locations around the campus. Along with the new buildings and public spaces, Microsoft's new campus is created to have running and walking trails and an open-air plaza capable of holding 8,000 to 12,000 people. However, with the new buildings, the company plans to take a different approach.
Buildings on the campus will be closer together than before and its focus is more on pedestrianising Microsoft's headquarters, rather than turning it into a sprawl navigable only by auto.
The massive redesign is expected to create 2,500 construction and development jobs. A bridge across WA-520, which will link both sides of its campus, will be for cyclists and walkers only.
"We've focused on the cultural transformation of the company". Having been the bane of many Microsoft employee for their confusing corridors, it's unlikely they'll be missed. "As Microsoft continues to create the tools and services that are shaping the future of work, we can't think of a better time to modernize our campus into a model of ingenuity and innovation", explained Smith.
