4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Rumbles DC Area

A small earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1

It could be felt by some New York City and Long Island residents, too.

A 2011 Virginia natural disaster, that measured a much larger magnitude 5.8, was felt from North Carolina to even Canada.

"It apparently shook up quite a few people".

People from Baltimore, Boston, New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia felt it. USGS says the quake was shallow - only 5 miles deep which helps amplify its effect.

An 4.4-magnitude natural disaster centered near Dover, Delaware but could be felt for hundreds of miles along the East Coast.

It was followed up ten minutes later by a less powerful 5.0 aftershock in the same area, the survey said.

People quickly took to social media to share their surprise at the rare Northeast occurrence.

It was two or three seconds of anxiety, he said. "My friend called me and was like 'I don't want to go to work, I don't wanna do anything". He glanced out the window, he added, thinking the movement may have been caused by a heavy truck trundling down the road with such force that it rattled the pillars of the building. "I stepped outside and spoke to some co-workers who weren't really sure what was going on either", Jenne explained. It occurred near 5 p.m.
