German Christmas market evacuated after suspicious package delivered

"At this point no ignition device has been found", they said.

Later in the day, police said the cylindrical object contained nails, wires and batteries but no detonator.

German police evacuated the city centre of Potsdam, near Berlin, on Friday afternoon after a package was found near a Christmas market containing fireworks and "hundreds of nails" in a tin.

Interior Minister Karl-Heinz Schroeter said the powder would be analysed to determine if it was genuine or a dummy.

The device was defused at 5.30pm local time (4.30pm GMT), after police were called three hours before.

However, police warned of speculation on Twitter and told people to avoid "premature conclusions".

Police raids in four different cities last month resulted in the arrests of six Syrian nationals, who are suspected of plotting a terror strike on another Christmas market.

German authorities were already on high alert for an attack on one of the country's famous Christmas markets after 12 people were killed in Berlin past year.

Christmas markets opened across Germany on Monday at the start of the holiday season, fortified with security staff and concrete barriers to protect shoppers.

On December 19th, 2016, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker and Islamic State sympathiser, Anis Amri (24), stole an articulated lorry and ploughed into booths in the market.

The package, deposited outside a drugstore, was rendered harmless by police on Friday, according to a tweet from police in Brandenburg, the state of which Potsdam is the capital.
