Flanked by empty chairs with name cards for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Trump said he was "not really that surprised" the Democratic leaders decided not to attend a scheduled meeting at the White House. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis. - to meet Tuesday afternoon.
The White House responded by canceling its daily press briefing at the last minute and having President Trump address pool reporters with some vaguely reassuring promises to "handle" Pyongyang's nuclear threat before bitching about Democratic leadership.
After Trump tweeted he didn't see a possible deal with Democrats, Democratic leaders backed out of a meeting with the president.
"Chuck and Nancy" are, of course, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Schumer reiterated that Democrats won't meet with Trump because of the tweet, which he said indicated that the president "isn't serious" about negotiating with them but is serious about scoring political points by dissing them.
He told reporters that he would blame Democrats if the government shut down if they failed to reach an agreement.
Democrats complained they were disappointed by the president's statement on Twitter suggesting that it would be hard to reach a deal with Democrats, prompting them to cancel the meeting. "Problem is they want illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked, are weak on Crime and want to substantially RAISE Taxes". If it happens, it's going to be over illegals coming into the country, crime pouring into the country, no border wall, which everyone wants-I got elected partially because of the border wall.
On December 8, the USA government will run out of money (though the deadline may be temporarily extended to later in the month).
Trump said he "would absolutely blame the Democrats" if there is a government shutdown next week.
While it did not pose any threat to United States territories, a spokesman for the Pentagon said: "Our commitment to the defence of our allies, including the Republic of Korea and Japan, in the face of these threats, remains ironclad".
How this increases the potential for a shutdown: Trump's sticking on issues important to his base makes him less likely to compromise with Democrats, who want to advance polar opposite issues important to their base. We're going to learn very soon.
But the president's extraneous tweets and quips have diverted attention from Trump's agenda at a time of maximum outcome for his tax proposal and with a series of looming budget deadlines and other priorities in Congress. Wednesday's tweets came hours before Trump was departing for Missouri to rally support for his tax plan in the Senate.
