Arizona State officially hires former Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards on Monday

Herm Edwards' introductory press conference at Arizona State was as strange as his hiring

Herm Edwards hired as 'CEO' of Arizona State football; what could go wrong?

The former New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs head coach hadn't conducted a press conference in a while.

Nine years after he pressed "pause" on his football coaching career, the "play" button has been pressed.

Hopefully, the big man upstairs takes no issue. "I'll be back in studio in Bristol (at ESPN), and I'll be coaching football by the way", Edwards said.

"Devils Digest, huh?" Edwards said.

For ASU fans, though, the more pressing concern will be on how Edwards' arrival will impact the scoreboard inside Sun Devil Stadium.

Edwards said he's not concerned the gap between his coaching jobs will be problematic.

Don't think I've heard that one before!

The announcement, released on ASU's athletics website, comes after reports last week said Edwards would accept the position.

It was reported last week that Edwards - out of the college ranks since 1989 - would be the program's new head coach if school president Dr. Michael Crow approved the hire (more on that here).

Graham, who will coach Arizona State through its appearance in the Sun Bowl against North Carolina State on December 29, compiled a 95-60 record in six seasons.

Edwards will oversee what the university called a New Leadership Model, which it says will be "a collaborative approach to managing the ASU football program that includes sport and administrative divisions, which will operate as distinct, but collective units focused on elevating all aspects of Sun Devil Football". While a team mascot probably doesn't come up often in head coaching negotiations, it might be beneficial for Coach to know a little bit about his new school. This structure will allow the department to form a multi-layered method to the talent evaluation and recruiting processes, increase its emphasis on both student-athlete and coach development and retention, and provide a boost in resource allocation and generation.

"Passion for my faith, my family and my occupation as a football coach are the things that have driven me back to the grass", Edwards said in a statement.
