Ex-Yemeni President Killed by Huthi Rebels

Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed
Media Advisor to the Yemeni Supreme Political Council, Ahmed al-Habishi, announced Monday that former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been killed in the area controlled by UAE air force.
The Saudi-led coalition on Saturday welcomed Saleh's offer of talks, a move the Huthi-run Al Masirah TV said showed the coalition's "faith" that the former president would reverse alliances.
Multiple images and videos of what appeared to be Saleh's dead body were posted to social media sites, though could not be immediately confirmed.
Saleh was once allied with the rebel Houthis, a Shiite group linked with Iran.
Circumstances of his death remained unclear but some officials said rebels killed him as he tried to leave the capital Sanaa.
Residents in the capital of Sanaa mired in the humanitarian catastrophe said that they had witnessed the explosion at Saleh's home.
Saleh's supporters managed on Saturday to seize control of several embassies and government buildings from the Houthis.
"I call on our brothers in neighbouring countries... to stop their aggression and lift the blockade... and we will turn the page", he said in a televised speech.
The breakdown of the fragile alliance has caused the Saudi-led coalition to step up its bombing of Houthi positions, in support of Saleh's forces, leaving the rebels increasingly isolated after three years of war.
The Houthis had branded him a traitor for allegedly striking a deal with Saudi Arabia.
The mediation effort came as supporters of the 2012-ousted president battled the Houthi militias in Sanaa, until finally Saleh announced that Yemen's parliament, dominated by his party, was the only legitimate power in the country.
The fighting has killed dozens of people and wounded hundreds, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross, and raised concern of further casualties among civilians.
Saudi Arabia and the United States have accused Iran of supplying weapons to the Huthis, which Tehran strongly denies.
Yemen's war has killed more than 10,000 people since 2015, displaced more than two million people, and caused a cholera outbreak infecting almost one million people.
