Qualcomm announces latest Snapdragon 845 processor

Qualcomm takes aim at Intel in PC processors

Equipping a laptop with mobile connectivity is not necessarily new - Intel has been doing it for years with their own modems (such as the XMM7260 and XMM7360), mostly in business end devices or Chromebooks.

See Qualcomm's sizzle reel for the processor below. Just that the NovaGo is running a mobile processor does not put the device into isolation.

Recently AMD announced it was bringing its new high-performance x86 CPU cores and its latest GPU architecture to the notebook space. To further that vision, HP's Kevin Frost took the stage to introduce the company's upcoming Snapdragon 835-powered Envy x2 convertible. The NovaGo can be similarly equipped with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but its fixed display is a 13.3-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel panel. Retail prices start from US$599 for the 4 GB RAM/64 GB storage version and tops at US$799 for the 8 GB RAM/256 GB storage version. Frost didn't mention a stylus, but the machine was pictured with such a pen attached to its case, so it probably supports Windows Ink.

Both of these devices will come preinstalled with Windows 10 S but will allow for a one-time upgrade to a full Windows 10 license which will allow users to install non-Windows store applications. The Envy relies entirely on USB Type-C ports for its input and output, while the Asus has full-size USB Type-A ports and an HDMI port. "The Envy x2 will have a Surface-like detachable keyboard and will be just 0.3" (6.9 mm) thick.

It might look like so many laptops that have gone before it but the headline feature here, of course, is that the NovaGo runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform. It also says that the built-in LTE connectivity will provide significantly faster speeds than other now available LTE-equipped Windows 10 computers.

Qualcomm set its sights on the Windows market late previous year when it announced that its Snapdragon 835 SoC processor would find its way into Asus, HP, and Lenovo Windows 10 devices featuring "Always On" connectivity. The company didn't give many details about the processor but said Samsung's foundry business will be manufacturing the chip. We'll be checking out the new ASUS laptop later today, so stay tuned for our hands-on impressions to find out if this is a device worth your time.
