Creek Fire Burns 2500 Acres in Sylmar Area; Evacuation Orders in Place

The so-called Skirball Fire was reported shortly before 5 a.m. near Mulholland Drive, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

More than 125 firefighters and helicopters dropping water were on the scene of the 405 freeway near the Getty Center, an art complex that draws almost 2 million visitors annually.

Fierce Santa Ana winds whipped up the most destructive of the wildfires on Monday evening.

Los Angeles Mission College's Main Campus at 13356 Eldridge Ave. and the East Campus at 12890 Harding St., both in Sylmar, were closed for the day. The fire is now estimated at 50,500 acres and is being pushed by strong east winds. Some 50 acres had burned within a matter of just two hours as Los Angeles firefighters contend with wind gusts of up to 30 mph. About 700 firefighters responded to what was labeled the Creek Fire.

The fire is occurring while fighters across Southern California are battling a blaze in Ventura County. Also, an area south of the 210 Freeway was ordered evacuated in the Shadow Hills area, in a roughly triangular area between Sunland Boulevard to the south, Wentworth Street to the north and Tuxford Street to the west, officials said. Six fixed-wing aircraft and a number of helicopters were deployed to the scene, Garcetti said.

The fire was burning in the same general area as the devastating Bel Air Fire of 1961.

As homes are destroyed or damaged in the area, there will likely be an uptick in lease and rental demand, said Umansky, though the rental vacancy rate in Bel-Air and Brentwood area is very low. As of 5:40 a.m., zero percent of the blaze has been contained. Winds were about 15 miles per hour. Firefighting crews set up on the southbound side of the 405 to prevent the fire from jumping the freeway, and northbound vehicles were being turned back.

If the fire crosses the 405 freeway, it will hit one of the highest priced residential areas of Brentwood, she added. The closure led to massive congestion on many streets in the San Fernando Valley and in West Los Angeles.
