Man flu real? Women will just have to get over it…

In compiling other studies, he discovered men are more likely to be admitted to the hospital for flu symptoms than women, that women generally have a better response to vaccination than men, and in one observational study, more men had flu-related deaths in the U.S. between 1997-2007.

However other healthcare professionals have said that the flu isn't "sexist" and that "man flu" isn't an actual disease caused by the influenza virus Are influenza symptoms really worse for men?

Sue recommends additional research on the matter of "man flu" but reaches this conclusion: "The concept of man flu, as commonly defined, is potentially unjust" due to their potentially-weaker immune responses.

Dr. Kyle Sue, a clinical assistant professor in family medicine from Memorial University of Newfoundland wrote the article and admits he was partly inspired by the lack of thorough examination on the issue.

Nevertheless, he says, the available evidence does suggest men suffer more with the flu than women.

He added, "Is it that women are more resilient, that they are able to juggle more when they are ill, or is it that they don't have as severe symptoms?"

Among them, the author points out that mouse studies have suggested that testosterone could dampen immune response to influenza, while certain female sex hormones could boost it. Here's everything you need to know about a new study's shocking findings.

Yet, doctors and women alike have long noticed that men tend to bemoan those symptoms more than women.

"I think the symptoms are real", Sue said.

"Man flu" is a term used to chide men who are suspected of exaggerating their symptoms when sick from a cold or other minor illness. During the reproductive years, it is women who often suffer more severe disease, in part because flu is worse for pregnant women but also because women develop higher - nearly excessive - inflammatory responses to flu.

Important new research also highlights the supreme palliative benefits of a sofa and a tv to #ManFlu sufferers.

The so-called "man flu" has been a punchline for decades, but according to one expert it may be time to stop taking it lightly.

"The best advice for anyone affected is to rest at home, drink plenty of fluids and to take over-the-counter painkillers", said Stokes-Lampard said.

Even without a complete understanding of the biological basis for man flu, Sue suggests this policy initiative in the name of public health: "Perhaps now is the time for male-friendly spaces, equipped with enormous televisions and reclining chairs, to be set up where men can recover from the debilitating effects of man flu in safety and comfort".

"Can the blame for man flu be shifted to the people who select these men as sexual partners rather than the men themselves?"

Sue acknowledged that more research is needed.
