6 killed, 22 people hospitalized in United States train derailment

An Amtrak train derailment hangs over an overpass along I-5 south of Seattle on Dec 18th 2017

Early Monday, during the first run of the new passenger service, 13 of the 14 cars went off the tracks at an overpass, some tumbling onto Interstate 5. It also happened on the first day of a new route for Amtrak trains moving between Tacoma and the state capital of Olympia.

Six died on February 3, 2015 outside New York City when a packed commuter train and a vehicle which was crossing the track collided, leaving six dead and 15 injured.

A section of the Amtrak train 501 derailed as it crossed a bridge over a major highway in Washington State.

Amtrak says the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.

"This specific vehicle on the train derailed minutes after we shot this video". "This time it may have saved @AlexRozierK5 and @King5unit9's lives", tweeted KING 5 News reporter Elisa Hahn.

AMTRAK 501: Uh, we were coming around the corner to take the bridge over I-5 there, right north into Nisqually and we went on the ground.

Conductor: "I'm still figuring that out".

Chris Karnes, a local transit official who was aboard the train, told local CBS News affiliate KIRO-TV that the accident took place while it was going around a curve. "We got cars everywhere and down onto the highway".

"Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements", he said, according to KOMO News.

The multi-year, state-led project cost $181 million, a released from Amtrak stated.

She said all of the train cars have been searched, and emergency efforts would likely extend through the night and into the morning.

All southbound lanes of the interstate are closed due to the derailment and the sight stunned motorists heading to work.

"Emergency services are on the scene, and Amtrak management is responding".

"We will do everything in our power to support our passengers and crew and their families", Anderson said.

"We will update with additional details as they become available", Amtrak said. "You just knew when you saw it that something frightful had happened", witness Danae Orlob said.
