Apple admits it slows down older iPhones

Apple Sued Slow Your Roll ... Not Our Old iPhones!!!

"Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions", Apple said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

Geekbench developer John Poole has mapped out performance for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 over time, and has come to the conclusion that Apple's iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2.0 updates introduce this throttling for different devices. iOS 10.2.1 is particularly relevant, as this update was created to reduce random shutdown issues for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

Lithium batteries degrade over time because of what happens during the charging and discharging cycle. There's no charge if you paid upfront for AppleCare Plus coverage and have a battery Apple thinks warrants replacing.

After Primate Labs, which makes an application that measures the speed of iPhone processors, disclosed data Monday that seemingly showed the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 models perform slower as they aged, Apple addressed the claims two days later.

There might be a good reason for that, Apple confirmed to media outlets Thursday: The company is deliberately slowing down some iPhones, albeit for a good reason.

"So what Apple is saying in their defense is that as the battery ages it can hurt the iPhone itself". Proof: My iPhone 6 was bought 3years ago and recently got really slow.

The lithium-ion battery can crash if it's overworked too much, once it begins so-called "battery decay".

Should Apple have told customers? "That doesn't engender trust", wrote developer and blogger Nick Heer.

Apple insists the reason is not because they want you to purchase a newer model. Apple New Zealand has a handful of authorised outlets and resellers who offer repairs.

Customers have long-suspected - and reported - that the operating system updates have, in turn, caused their older iPhones to slow drastically, with some suggesting that the company does it as a tactic to get people to buy a new phone.

"They should be more transparent about it", said Chris Green from the tech consultancy Bright Bee.

When the iPhone 7 was released past year, Business Insider reported on a survey of buyers that listed the reasons why they upgraded.

"You're taking away performance that somebody has paid for".

"But I do see where they're coming from".

To check your phone's battery health, download an app like Battery Life or Battery HD+ from the App Store.
