Guatemala to move embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in Trump's wake

The fresh violence came a day after the U.N. General Assembly resolution denouncing Trump's decision, largely ignoring his threat to cut off aid to any country that went against him.

Israel's Foreign Ministry has praised a decision by the president of Guatemala for the Central American country to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, saying the announcement represented "true friendship" between the two countries.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other top Turkish officials have remained at the forefront of worldwide opposition to the USA move.

"God bless both our countries - Israel and Guatemala!"

On Dec. 6, Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which is being strongly opposed by the worldwide community.

In an interview with Israel Radio, Hotovely refused to name the countries she was in talks with but Channel 10 reported that Honduras was the next likely country to follow suit from its neighbouring Guatemala. Morales gave no timetable for when the Guatemalan embassy will move.

"It's a shameful and illegal act that goes totally against the wishes of church leaders in Jerusalem" and of a non-binding U.N. General Assembly resolution condemning the US recognition, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, the French press agency, AFP, reported.

'The state of Palestine considers this as a flagrant act of hostility against the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and global law, ' it said. Nineteen years later, in June 1967, Israel captured the eastern side, expanded the city's boundaries and annexed it - an act that was never recognised internationally.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said on his official Facebook account on Sunday that after talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he made a decision to instruct his foreign ministry to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Israel's passage in June 1980 of a law proclaiming Jerusalem its "indivisible and eternal capital" led to a U.N. Security Council resolution calling upon those countries to move their embassies to Tel Aviv, prompting their transfer.

Palestinians have been clashing with Israeli troops since Trump's Jerusalem announcement on December 6.
