The most popular activities included the traditional midnight toast with sparkling wine, the moment to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, the prayers and the Christmas carols around the Nativity scene. Churches across the city held midnight services and holy prayers to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. There was an abundance of Santa Claus who continued to give small gifts to the children. "May the festival bring happiness to our families and our shared society", President Ram Nath Kovind said on his official Twitter handle. Christmas celebrations will last until the dawn of 2018 in the city.

As the bells tolled, people thronged the churches - including the Cathedral Church of The Redemption and Sacred Heart Cathedral. "Merry Christmas everyone", Mehbooba tweeted.

The air reverberated with chimes of bells. The Christmas messages were disseminated at these services.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and the governor of the state N.N Vohra greeted the Christian community on the auspicious day.

Cribs, decorated in attractive ways and displaying the birth of Lord Jesus, were seen at several houses in the state.

The biggest Mass in the Valley was held at the Holy Family Catholic Church at Maulana Azad Road here, where hundreds of Christians, including women and children, assembled to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ and held special prayers.

Archbishop of Goa and Daman, Filipe Neri Ferrao, in his message, appealed to the people to spread the message of peace, love and harmony.

Bhubaneswar: The spirit of Christmas has gripped the capital city Bhubaneswar with people, irrespective of race and religion, indulging in the festive fervour. All the Roman Catholic churches in the city started their morning prayer services between 6.30am and 7am.

The Bishop conveyed his Christmas wishes and prayed for worldly peace and prosperity.

The Chief Minister recited a verse of the Bible.
