Five TTV Dhinakaran loyalists sent packing by ruling party
All the other candidates including the DMK's N Marudhuganesh forfeited their deposits.
They cited Dhinakaran's response to the acquittal of DMK leaders Kanimozhi and A Raja in the 2G spectrum allocation case on 21 December, that he was happy for them as they hailed from Tamilnadu. He recalled how he had predicted this victory despite the AIADMK candidate Madhusudhanan enjoying support of the state government, the Centre and the Election Commission.
Reports from Tamil Nadu indicating that many MPs, MLAs from official camp were approaching Dinakaran after the RK Nagar poll victory.
A meeting of the AIADMK leaders chaired by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, who is also the convener of the coordinating committee overseeing the party administration, chose to remove P Vetrivel, MG Pathiban, M Rengasamy and Thangatamil Selvan from the official posts held by them. Referring to the two-leaf symbol that the Edappadi K Palaniswami-O Panneerselvam group won recently, Dinakaran said, "The party and symbol are not important in an election". "We are the true AIADMK". He also said the Edappadi K Palaniswami government would fall in three months. Sources said that the meeting has been convened following differences of opinions among the top leadership about the strategy adopted by the party at RK Nagar.
Meanwhile, TTV Bhaskaran, the Mannargudi-based younger brother of Dhinakaran told reporters that the RK Nagar bypoll result proved that the people of Tamil Nadu wanted the Sasikala family to lead the AIADMK and Tamil Nadu. In about two decades, he is the first independent candidate to be elected in Tamil Nadu and that too with such a huge margin scoring higher than that of Jayalalithaa in 2016 Assembly polls.
The ruling AIADMK has fielded veteran leader E Madhusudanan who has held the RK Nagar seat in the past as well, while DMK has fielded Marudhu Ganesh, a local considered to be a strong candidate. While Dinakaran polled 89,013 votes, Madhusudhanan got 48,306 votes.
