Trump's frequent and blistering attacks on the nation's premier law enforcement agency have proven a tough challenge for Wray, who took the reins in August after Trump fired James Comey as he was leading the bureau's probe into possible Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election. The House Intelligence Committee recently questioned him for eight hours and two days after he went to Congress where he answered nine hours' worth of questions from the House Judiciary and Oversight committees.
This comes as President Donald Trump and his supporters in Congress have intensified their attacks on the FBI, which is seen by many as a way to try and discredit special counsel Robert Mueller, the former leader of the bureau, and bring into doubt any findings he may come up with in the Russian Federation election meddling investigation should they be damaging to the Trump administration.
Shortly after the newspaper report was published, Trump retweeted his earlier contention that McCabe's wife, Jill, who ran unsuccessfully for the Virginia Senate in 2015, had been given almost $700,000 by allies of Hillary Clinton at a time when Andrew McCabe was involved in the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of state.
The US President appeared to quote Fox News in a tweet about Andrew McCabe, who is planning to retire from the bureau in the months ahead after being attacked for alleged anti-Trump bias in the agency.
McCabe, 49, has been at the center of a string of controversies at the bureau for more than a year and faced sharp GOP criticism in three congressional hearings last week.
In December, e-mails from McCabe aide Lisa Page revealed intense anti-Trump partisanship at the FBI's highest levels during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Mr McCabe's wife, Jill, received $700,000 [£520,000] in donations from Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe's political action committee and the Virginia Democratic Party for a state Senate race in 2015.
McCabe will retire early from the Federal Bureau of Investigation after revelations that hundreds of thousands of Clinton-allied fundraising dollars were spent on behalf of his wife during a race for the Virginia state Senate in 2015.
"FBI would set a unsafe precedent if it forced out dedicated career public servants in capitulation to Trump and WH pressure", tweeted Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. "Let me tell you something - that's a criminal act". Mr McAuliffe is a longtime supporter of Ms Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton.
The Justice Department's Inspector General's Office is reportedly probing McCabe's role in the Clinton email investigation.
