It has scaled up its attacks in Kabul, including on security installations and the country's Shiite minority.

On Thursday, reports stated that at least 40 people were killed and several others were injured in a suicide bombing attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.

No one immediately claimed responsibility.

According to them, there were at least two, maybe three suicide bombers who also used grenades in the attack. All the casualties reported were of civilian passersby.

Interior Ministry deputy spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said at least 40 people had been killed and 30 wounded in the blast, with numerous victims being students.

Afghan president Ashraf Ghani called the attack a "crime against humanity".

Authorities say an attack on a Shiite Muslim cultural center in the Afghan capital Kabul has left at least 35 people dead and 20 wounded. An initial blast at the entrance to the compound housing the two offices was followed by two more explosions inside the offices. They then set off explosive devices in the basement of the building where scores of people had gathered to mark the December 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by the former Soviet Union, he said.

It was unclear what militant group was behind the attack, and there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Separately, Dawlat Abad District Gov. Mohammad Karim said a powerful mine killed six shepherd children ranging in age from 8 to 10 on Wednesday.

The Interior Ministry said it was a suicide attack during a morning panel at the centre, with one journalist working for the agency confirmed dead and another injured. Security in the city has been ramped up since May 31 when a massive truck bomb ripped through the diplomatic quarter, killing some 150 people and wounding around 400 others - mostly civilians.
