Tracking light snow Thursday morning along with frigid wind chills
29 December 2017, 12:28 | Rufus Hill
Freezing rain, sleet in possible forecast for Thursday afternoon, evening
Friday are in the lower and middle teens. Winds should subside before the coldest part of the morning, however. This will give your body the energy it needs to keep you warm through the bitterly cold days. Highs will only be in the teens across most of the state.
The chance for snow continues Friday in central IL as wind chills stay near 0. Wind chill values will remain below zero throughout the day. A north northeast wind will be around 8 miles per hour. The record for the Greater Hartford Area is 18 degrees, set in 1924.
But despite the lack of record-setting cold, it's important to be aware of the risky cold.
While some parts of the country are being inundated with snow, there is a small chance of the white stuff in Alabama this week according to the National Weather Service. The ingredients for a substantial coastal storm look to come together too late and too far offshore to have an impact on Southern New England.
This first lobe of arctic air will lessen slightly Friday and Saturday before another blast of even colder air arrives for early next week.
As winds shift back to the northeast Thursday, cold air damming will set up across the region, knocking temperatures down by about 10 degrees. A second, stronger surge of arctic air moves in just in time for the New Year. The overnight low is expected to be near 35.
The deep freeze will continue as we head into January, but there is some relief in sight. Highs to start off the New Year will only top out in the single digits... Brr. But, at least the sky will be sunny. The incoming airmass is likely to be cold enough to support frozen precip, but as ever the question is whether the track of the developing Gulf low will thread the needle between being cold enough/too dry if it tracks to the south, or wet enough/all rain if it tracks north. The welcomed sunshine will take some of the sting off the temperatures for Thursday afternoon.
Winds will create low wind chill temperatures and white out conditions.
There are lower chances of seeing freezing drizzle for central Alabama, and forecasters in Birmingham removed chances for measurable precipitation from the forecast. That's nearly 20 degrees below normal for early January! The longest deep freeze on record lasted 19 days and that was in December 1989!
Below-average temperatures are forecast through Wednesday.
