Instagram's Feed Now Offers "Recommended" Posts

Instagram becomes an interest network with hashtag following

New Instagram test adds posts your friends like into your feed

Instagram will show these recommended posts under a new section called "Recommended for You" in your main feed.

Dear @instagram please put everything back in chronological order and stop doing the recommended posts.

These will be selected from accounts that users do not already follow, based on likes that the posts receive from other accounts that the users do follow, Instagram has announced.

Previously recommended content was in the Explore section and would not be pushed onto the home feed. It does seem as though a number of Instagram users wish that they could get rid of the new addition; a large number of tweets were very negative on the whole idea.

Perhaps the biggest downside of the new feature is that users do not have the option of disabling it. Instagram plans to have 3 to 5 recommended posts in your feed.

The app, based in Menlo Park, is used by millions of people each day to share photos and videos, as well as to tag them with relevant subject hashtags. Such users can take some solace from the "Hide" feature that will remove the recommended list from the home feed, but only temporarily. It also lets users follow hashtags instead of just people. The company hopes the tweak will help to drive engagement with the Instagram app, which of course would then allow it to charge top dollar to advertisers aiming to sell their products to as many users as possible.

The section appears after users have viewed all their posts in the feed, a spokesperson said.

'Now it's even easier to stay connected with the interests, hobbies, passions and communities you care about'. Most of the times users find the new feature to be intriguing and completely unnecessary. It suggests photos and videos for you directly in your feed from people you don't follow. For example, when Facebook recommends friends for us, and not getting the point that users would add those friends without this feature if they really wanted to! To go a step further and hide your Suggested searches too, go to the search page, tap and hold the account you want to hide, and choose Hide from the pop-up window.
