Police on Sunday arrested a man they say was found with several guns and ammunition in his Hyatt Regency hotel room downtown

An off-duty Houston Police Department officer encountered a man who was acting erratically and belligerent. At 1:30 a.m. on December 31, while escorting Ziemba to his hotel room, the officer called for urgent backup after his attempts to subdue the man failed.

Police arrested a man and seized several guns from his hotel room and vehicle in Houston just hours before the hotel's scheduled New Year's Eve celebration.

Once police arrived around 1:30 a.m., they searched the man's room on the 28th floor, the top floor of the hotel, where they found the weapons and ammo cache. He said his truck was parked in the hotel garage. He was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing.

Highest will be around Times Square in NY, where police said they would deploy rooftop observers and counter-snipers in more buildings than usual, as well as patrolling hotels.

The man, whose identity hasn't been released, also had a handgun, a shotgun and troves of ammunition, cops told local media.

Police had not yet interviewed the man, and had not yet determined why he had an arsenal in his hotel room.

The Hyatt is preparing its own New Years Eve celebration at the hotel with a 50,000 balloon drop at the stroke of midnight, its website said.

Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted later on New Year's Eve that the threat had been 'contained'.
