Major US airports suffer technical glitch as passport system down

Long Lines At Miami International Airport Due To US Customs Computer Issue

The outage affected airports including JFK, San Francisco and Denver, as worldwide travelers arrived from holiday travels on New Year's Day. It said that all airports were back online after the outage lasted from 7:30 p.m.to about 9:30 p.m. ET.

A two-hour computer glitch temporarily suspended the work of US Customs on Monday, causing massive delays at immigration checkpoints in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta.

As Reuters notes, a similar outage occurred at the same time past year, so it might be that the customs systems were slammed with Christmas travelers and couldn't handle the excess traffic. DFW International was one of the airports affected.

Customs and Border Protection said its officers continued to process travelers using "alternative procedures" during the outage. All airports are now back on line. The agency didn't say what caused the problem, but said "there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature".

"During the technology disruption, CBP had access to national security-related databases and all travelers were screened according to security standards", CBP said in a statement.

Other airports, including Denver International Airport, also said they were affected.
