Delhi under fog blanket on New Year flights trains disrupted

A thick blanket of fog engulfed the national capital and its suburbs on New Year Day, hitting domestic and worldwide operations at the Delhi airport and delaying departing and arriving trains.

Dozens of trains were also cancelled, with passengers left in the cold at New Delhi's railway station as temperatures dropped to 8 degrees Celsius. This year's worst condition of fog has been experienced. Most of the northwestern plains are in its grip. Sunday's maximum temperature settled at 23.9 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was recorded at 6.4. Flights are either getting delayed by hours or completely cancelled. The three-hour suspension of flight operations meant that it took hours for the backlog to clear. Arrivals were similarly affected, with only some aircraft being able to land.

Departures require a visibility of at least 125 metres, while planes can land in visibility below 50 metres if the pilots are trained in CAT IIIB technology for low-visibility landings that allows qualified aircraft to land in visibility of 25-50 metres. 15 have been cancelled, the Northern Railways said.

A shallow fog would continue throughout the region all through the day, the Met said. SAFAR, which has its own monitoring network, recorded "severe" levels of pollution.

The day's average air quality index (AQI) was at 400, classified as "very poor" by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Many took to Twitter to share pictures of their areas covered by the blinding fog as the hashtag #delhifog was among the most trending topics on the microblogging site.
