Doctors in Kerala to join nationwide strike against bill today

Medical association calls for suspension of private healthcare services across India on Tuesday

On a day when the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for suspending routine services for 12 hours in protest against the Bill, Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda said talks were on with the IMA to clear their doubts. "Since, the strike may involve a large number of medical professionals, it is anticipated that there would be inconvenience to the patient care services in hospitals", the health ministry advisory said. "Other provision that allows medical practitioners of Indian medicine to practise allopathic medicine following a bridge course should be dropped from the Bill", said TNGDA state headquarters secretary Dr P Balakrishnan.

Speaking to ANI, Agarwal said, "The National Medical Commission Bill will be discussed in the parliament today and Indian Medical Association is going to oppose it". Therefore, about 3 lakh doctors from the private and government hospital of the country will be on strike today.

In Tamil Nadu, however, government doctors, too, boycotted OPD services in protest against the National Medical Commission Bill, PTI reported.

"The minimum qualification to practice modern medicine shall remain MBBS".

NMC will replace the existing Medical Council of India (MCI) and will have a 25-member commission of which 20 will be nominated by the Centre.

Terming the Bill as "anti-people and anti-patient", the association in a statement has stated that the Bill purported to eradicate corruption is "designed to open the floodgates of corruption". According to it, the 15% seats of the private medical colleges will be decided by the management of fees. Legitimate inspection and appropriate regulation on starting and running a Medical College.

Most of the private hospitals would not operate their OPDs between 6 a.m.to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, said President of the Karnataka chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) H.N. Ravindra.
