LG to show off 88-inch 8K OLED TV at CES
We've reviewed OLED 4K HDR TVs here at 4K.com repeatedly and nearly without variation, our analysis of them has been exceptionally positive.
That is huge by any means for a TV, and the same also applies to the pixel count that livens up the display, which easily sums up to more than 33 million.
That said, LG's television is more notable for its technology and the simple fact that it exists; CES is about practical technology and a little bit of showboating, and LG's 88-inch 8K display is in the latter camp for 99 percent of the people that will get to sit down and take a look.
In other words, this experimental new OLED UHD TV is an absolute monster of advanced technology.
While that's not the largest television you can buy, the upgrade to LG's (now paltry-looking) 77-inch 4K display is the first very big OLED display with more than 33 million pixels to play with-perfect for all the 8K content you can access, which is none. Besides, it's also the TV with the largest count of pixels, as LG's upcoming beast will be packing an 8K resolution.
The LG unit could still certainly play 4K content and could easily do so with 1080p videos, as well. It sets a new standard in the 8K LED category and many wonder, how much more the companies be able to push the envelope in the home entertainment gadgets.
As for its competition, well there is none at the moment.
There have been larger 8K displays - going as high as 145-inch - but none using the OLED technology.
As with the TV, there is no information available with the pricing.
What's more, LG's 8K TV is likely to be considerably more expensive than anything on the market. Only recently, 4K/Ultra HD and HDR videos began to stream on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, among other online service providers.
As such, if price alone isn't the factor, the lack of quality content shot in native 8K resolution should be another reason not to opt for the TV just yet.
