Savannah Guthrieannounced this morning on-air that Hoda Kotb will replace Matt Lauer as co-anchor, marking the first time in the show's 62-year history that two women will be at the helm.
"Sounds like you want a steak, not an anchor", Roker commented, quoting the tweet in question.
NBC News chairman Andy Lack announced Kotb'spromotion in a Tuesday morning memo just before showtime.
She will anchor the first two hours with Ms. Guthrie and continue to co-host the fourth hour with Kathie Lee Gifford. Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts blazed that path for ABC's Good Morning America in the 2000s, but morning shows have traditionally paired a man and a woman as host.
"There's no one I'd rather be sitting next to in 2018 than you", Kotb said.
"Welcome to Today and we are kicking off the year right because Hoda is officially the co-anchor of Today, so let's give her a round of applause", Guthrie began the show Tuesday morning.
According to People, NBC News first presented the offer to Hoda Kotb before the holidays started, and it's obvious that she didn't take too long to offer a positive response.

For NBC'sToday, 2017 was as big a year as any in the morning news show's recent past, with the biggest headlines coming as longtime anchor Matt Lauer was sacked in the aftermath of sexual misconduct allegations.
Hoda Kotb (left) is taking over the "Today" show anchor seat formerly filled by Matt Lauer (right). "I think we should send some medics to Alexandria, Va, where my mom has likely fainted".
"I'm pinching myself", Kotb responded.
Ratings could explain the decision to keep Kotb as a host of the show.
"They have an undeniable connection with each other and most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of TODAY", Lack said in a statement.
A day after he was sacked, the network said two more women had come forward. The timing is important for NBC, because Today will get a burst of attention next month with the Winter Olympics.
Kotb won a Peabody award for her work with Dateline, and a Daytime Emmy award as part of the Today show.
