Triple talaq bill likely to be tabled in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday

In fact, it is learnt that the opposition parties are exploring the idea of moving a "motion of amendment under Rule 125", jointly to make amendments to the present bill to protect the rights of the Muslim women.
When the Bill was in the Lok Sabha, most of the leading parties in the Opposition, including Congress, had voted in its favour.
Meanwhile, the opposition is demanding that the bill be first tabled to the select committee. The Congress however emphasised that it supports "any move to abolish the Triple Talaq", but has questioned the jail term provision asking how a man in prison will provide for the woman and children he has abandoned using the triple talaq.
According to Business Standard, the Centre described the voting as "historic" and even said that there is no doubt that the Bill will be passed in Rajya Sabha as well. The Opposition is now working on a coordinated strategy to push through amendments, particularly to ensure that the bill's provision on non-bailable arrest is watered down.
What is anti-triple talaq bill?
A meeting of the Business Advisory Committee of the Rajya Sabha ended without a consensus on the issue as the government was keen that the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 be adopted as passed last week by the Lok Sabha.
MPs noted that the government has conceded in Lok Sabha that the bill was conceived without consultations with Muslim groups and argued it was imperative that this gap be now filled because parliamentary committees, as a matter of procedure, take the views of a cross-section of people. The AIADMK and the BJD had also opposed the Clause (4) of the Bill, which according to them, criminalises triple talaq, a form of instant divorce, which otherwise is in the domain of civil jurisdiction. "We have told Congress that since they have not pressed for any amendments in the Lok Sabha, they should do the same in the Rajya Sabha", Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said.
The Shiv Sena, an ally of the BJP, has also demanded the bill be sent to a select committee.
The BAC has allotted time of four hours for a discussion on the bill on Wednesday.
