Officials confirmed the death of a South African woman

Spokesman of Egypt's Ministry of Health Jaled Migahet confirmed the deceased was 36 years of age, though he refused to comment on the nationality of the victim.

In 2013, Egypt witnessed one of the deadliest balloon crashes when a balloon flying over Luxor caught fire and plunged about 1,000ft (305m) to the ground, crashing into a sugar cane field killing at least 19 foreign tourists. Of the 12 injured, two were in a serious condition, MENA said.

The tragedy came four years after a hot air balloon crash injured 13 tourists seeking an aerial view of the city.

The tourist who was killed is a USA national, though the nationalities of the other tourists injured are still unknown, Al-Ahram reported.

Hot air balloon incidents have occurred in the past over Luxor. According to the reports, the incident was caused by strong winds.

Sixteen people were injured in a Luxor hot air balloon flight in 2011 as well.

An Australian woman onboard the balloon reported on Facebook that she had "bumps and bruises" after the crash, and would "probably never set foot in another hot balloon ever again".
