Hillary Clinton faces fresh investigations amid renewed corruption claims

"The fact remains that Hillary Clinton never took action as secretary of state because of donations to the Clinton Foundation", campaign spokesman Josh Schwerin said.

Federal authorities are actively investigating allegations of corruption related to the Clinton Foundation, the charity of Bill and Hillary Clinton, according to a United States official briefed on the matter. His role began in February 2016, following his appointment as deputy director and three months after his wife, Jill McCabe, lost her bid for a state Senate seat. There is skepticism that the probe will lead to any official charges.

That included actor James Woods who sees the launch of an investigation as the sign of another campaign promise by President Trump.

At that time, according to the documents, McCabe was "excluded from any involvement" in public corruption cases in Virginia.

Career prosecutors and agents shut down the investigation in 2016 for lack of evidence.

One person recently interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the case said agents' questions focused on whether donors to the Clintons' charitable efforts received favorable treatment from the Obama administration during Hillary Clinton's tenure in the State Department, the news outlet reported.

But Mr Sessions at the time told a Senate hearing there was no basis to appoint a special counsel to investigate the "Uranium One" sale. In November, the Justice Department wrote that Sessions would direct senior prosecutors to look into the cases about which they raised concerns and hinted that some might already be under investigation.

United States media outlets including the New York Times in recent years have scrutinised the Clinton Foundation.

During the campaign, Trump supporter Jeff Sessions, then an Alabama senator and now the attorney general, suggested that Clinton used her high position as secretary of state to "extort" global governments for her family's foundation.

On Friday morning, Nick Merrill, Clinton's chief spokesman, said the investigation was "disgraceful". It continues with Jeff Sessions doing Trump's bidding by heeding his calls to meddle with a department that is supposed to function independently. But, because of its global donor base and Hillary Clinton's former position as America's top diplomat, it also faced questions about contributions from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Algeria.
