Rest in peace. Comedian and actor Jerry Van Dyke has sadly died on Friday, January 5 at 86 years old.

Van Dyke was born in Danville, Illinois and carried a decades-long career in television that started with a debut on the iconic Dick Van Dyke Show.

He had turned down the lead role in "Gilligan's Island" in favor of the highly ridiculed "My Mother the auto", which lasted a single season. Van Dyke's career included the distinction of being Judy Garland's co-star on The Judy Garland Show, the late '60s series Accidental Family and the lead human role in the infamous sitcom My Mother the vehicle. The ABC sitcom ran for nine seasons, ending its run in 1997. A few of his other ill-fated projects included "Accidental Family", "Headmaster" and "13 Queens Boulevard". The role earned him four Emmy nominations.

Longtime comedian and actor Jerry Van Dyke has died.

It wasn't until he landed the role of Luther on Coach in 1989 that he gained prominent fame. "I say: 'Comeback from what?"

After "Coach" ended, Van Dyke continued to make guest appearances in sitcoms like "Yes, Dear", "Raising Hope" and "My Name is Earl".
