Donald Trump Plans to Attend World Davos Economic Forum

US President Donald Trump

Last year, President Xi Jinping of China attended the forum, which began just days before Mr. Trump's inauguration, becoming the first Chinese leader to mingle with the corporate and media crowd in the mountain village.

Davos is scheduled to be held January 23-26.

"The President welcomes opportunities to advance his America First agenda with world leaders", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Tuesday in a statement.

Also in United States politics, 85-year-old pardoned former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio announced he will run for Jeff Flake's senate seat.

Sanders said that Trump would defend his agenda while participating in the forum of global elites. Given its elitist reputation, most presidents have not attended and Trump skipped it a year ago; his decision to go may reflect the waning influence of anti-globalists around him, notably fired chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon. He withdrew the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement between Pacific Rim countries, and pulled out of the Paris climate accord, a commitment to reduce carbon emissions.

Trump would be the first US leader since President Bill Clinton to attend the Davos meeting.

American administrations regularly send representatives to Davos, but presidents often decline to attend.

The Global Economic Forum was founded in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, a business professor at the University of Geneva. He has also reopened talks on the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico.
