3 former Blackhawks named to Canada's Olympics hockey team

On Thursday, Hockey Canada announced the 25 players that will be on the roster for the Olympics. Still, expectations will be on Canada to bring home its 14th Olympic men's hockey title.

The 27 year old is playing in the Kontinental Hockey League.

Leggio, 33, played in one game after his senior season ended with the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators and began a full pro career the following season.

There are a handful of recognizeable names from their days in the National Hockey League that will look to guide Canada to a third straight gold medal.

"We need to play games to form as a team", said Desjardins, who had the bulk of his roster play in at least four tourney games during the evaluation process that looked at 100 players. Wojtek Wolski, the Polish-born, Toronto-raised KHLer, is preparing to play for Canada only a year after he almost lost his career to a catastrophic neck injury suffered after a headfirst slide into the boards.

"This team will make Canada proud, it will be a gold medal effort and there won't be one guy that puts that jersey on that this isn't the highlight of their hockey career".

As Kelly tried to come to terms with anything and everything about the Olympic experience, he pored over the names of his Canadian teammates. Gilbert Brule saw action in 299 games with Edmonton and two other clubs.

Andrew Ebbett, 35, of Vernon is on the Canadian Olympic men's hockey team.

Maxim Lapierre played the longest with the Canucks after Raymond, joining him in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final after a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, then playing another two seasons in Vancouver.

And Alberta's Mason Raymond spent two seasons with the Moose early in his career before going on to 546 career National Hockey League games with a variety of teams including Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Anaheim.

Without NHL players Canada struggled to find the top of the Olympic podium, enduring a 50-year gold medal drought before finally reclaiming the crown of Olympic champions at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games.

Canada's training camp starts January 28 in Latvia, with exhibition games in Riga on February 4 against Latvia and February 6 against Belarus. Unlike the US which chose several college players, Canada did not choose anyone from the NCAA ranks.

Speaking at a well-attended team unveiling in Calgary about the emotional phone calls informing players of their Olympic fate, Desjardins echoed the clear sentiment this will mean everything to these players. I think people can relate to our team and that we'll be part of the Canadian fabric.

"When we were interviewing Willie for the job one thing that stuck with me is he said: 'I don't think people really care the level of player they're going to watch at the Olympics". Toews won two golds and Belfour won one.
