Terming the suspension of five civic official as an eyewash, Nirupam demanded a CBI or a judicial probe into the incident saying the municipal commissioner "was guilty of overlooking irregularities".

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that BMC Commissioner has been asked to investigate the fire case. It has been said that the premises should have roads, stairs to escape when there is a fire, and also ensure that this place is free from encroachment.

The building, located in the formerly industrial area of central Mumbai, houses several upscale restaurants that had moved in over the last few years to make it a popular nightlife destination, the New Delhi Television channel reported. "We are asking managers or owners of such properties to remove it on their own or else we will bring it down", BMC spokesperson Ram Dotonde said. Heart goes out to bereaved families.
