Gov. Inslee demands Trump administration not drill off Washington coast

Trump Expands Offshore Drilling in “Assault” on Biodiversity and Coastal & Indigenous Communities

Gov. Inslee wants Washington removed from drilling plan

Zinke called Brown, a Democrat, and they spoke for 28 minutes, spokesman Bryan Hockaday said.

This week, following Governor Rick Scott's meeting with United States Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, the Department of the Interior announced that Florida's coastline has been removed from consideration for future oil drilling.

Hockaday said Zinke agreed with concerns about the economic risks that offshore drilling could bring to OR, and committed to work with Brown and visit the state as part of a process to consider exempting OR from the offshore drilling plan. Providing all of our states with the same exemption from unsafe offshore oil and gas drilling would ensure that vital industries from tourism to recreation to fishing are not needlessly placed in harm's way. In addition to Florida, the states of Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Connecticut, California, Oregon, and Washington have all opposed this plan for new leases off their coasts.

"Creating a five-year (drilling) program is a very open and public process, and Secretary Zinke looks forward to meeting with governors and other coastal representatives who want to discuss the draft program", said spokeswoman Heather Swift.

This a case of special pleading at its worst, exacerbated by the fact that President Trump owns substantial beachfront resort property in Florida.

Zinke added that he supports Scott's position that "Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver".

"We are outraged; this is absolutely unacceptable", she said of the drilling plan.

Brown is at least the eighth governor to set up phone calls with Zinke over his proposal to open up offshore oil and natural gas drilling permits between 2019 and 2024 on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Industry groups praised the announcement, while environmental groups denounced the plan, saying it would harm America's oceans, coastal economies, public health and marine life.
