Google is getting into the audiobook business: The company launched a new audiobook store as part of its Google Play Books service Tuesday, promising competitive prices with a pay-as-you-go model.

While Amazon dominates the US audiobooks market, Google's major advantage is that its service is available in 45 countries, according to James McQuivey, VP at research firm Forrester.

And it's great to know that they not only work on iOS and Android devices but can also be listened through your Google Home Speakers while you attend to your household tasks. "You just pick up where you left off, no matter which device you are using", said Hartrell.

If you use Google Play Books and have been waiting for Google to offer support for audiobooks directly, the wait is finally over.

This doesn't come as a surprise as recent reports had suggested that Google might soon launch an audiobook section in a bid to compete with services like Audible.

Audiobooks will be accessible via Google Play Books on Web, Android, iOS.

Aware of the trend, Google too wants to encourage people to expand their horizons, so as of this week it has started selling audiobooks through its Play Store. Audiobooks typically sell between $7 and $15, but Google is offering some pretty large discounts to pull new users in, plus 50 percent off your first purchase.

The Google Play Store on Android and supported by Google Home devices. With Google, you can buy books only on a one-off basis.

For now, the ability to listen to audiobooks is limited only to English, but it's easy to imagine that more languages will be added over time. "Play Books has also been around for a long time, offering over 5 million ebooks in 75 countries, and interest in audiobooks is on the rise, along with audio content generally (e.g. digital music, podcasts, etc.)". And can also get a free few minutes preview of the audiobook before purchasing.
