WWE News: Triple H comments on possibility of WWE being sold

Many who remember the XFL have one question on their minds: "Will nicknames be on the back of the jerseys instead of last names?"

Like other leagues that have attempted to create an alternative to the NFL, the XFL struggled. In December 2017, he sold $100 million worth of WWE shares to fund the revival efforts.

In a Thursday afternoon press conference, McMahon announced the return of the XFL, a football league that he and NBC tried for one season in 2001. The first thing McMahon said was that the "new" XFL will looks to "give the game of football back to fans".

McMahon went straight into promotion mode, as anyone who is a WWE fan will be familiar with straight away, with pre-prepared buzzwords and marketing slogans coming from all angles.

Like the first rendition of the XFL, the league will consist of eight teams that will play games with a two-round playoff.

When asked afterward if Kaepernick would be allowed to play, McMahon said, "Why not?" No cities or TV partners were named. Each franchise will be owned by the league. The company was founded to make investments that include pro football. But the audience did not stick around on Saturday nights to watch bad football, lascivious cheerleader shots, sophomoric double entendres and other gimmicks that saw ratings plummet and quickly doomed the league. At this point in time, no cities were announced as the XFL is still looking into that.

It's unclear if Orlando will be among the selected franchises, but McMahon said during a 3 p.m. call with the media that "every city is in our radar", even cities with National Football League franchises.

The XFL postseason will have two semifinal games and a championship game. He wants a 2-hour game and even tossed out the idea of eliminating halftime. "It's football. But you want to reimagine it". When McMahon first launched the XFL, back in 2000, it took one year from when the announcement was made to the first game being played. McMahon said players will be expected to stand for the national anthem, which he called a time-honored tradition, and will not make political statements on the field. "And nothing to do with social issues, either. We are there to play football".

This time around, the league will be separate from the WWE, wrestling league officials said, and will be spearheaded by Alpha Entertainment.

Whether that's true or not, we're just thankful for a new professional football league because more football teams means more opportunities for fringe or washed up players to put on the pads once again. The delay is to build a proper infrastructure, including hiring coaches and players.
