EPAMarin Cilic is into his second Australian Open semi-final

Rafael Nadal Marin Cilic

Many viewers found Cilic's playing style "boring" to watch as he stayed at the baseline hitting the same power shots - with little variety or flair. I think I played great tournament so far with my level of tennis.

The victor of Rafael Nadal vs Marin Cilic will meet rising British star Kyle Edmund in the first semi-final on Thursday.

"I have a really good chance, I'm playing well and it's going to be a great experience".

After limping slowly into the press room, the 31-year-old said of his injury: "I started to feel the muscle was a little bit exhausted in the third set, but I was playing normal, no limitation".

The 29-year-old Cilic collected his second win against a World No. 1 when he beat Rafael Nadal in five sets to advance to the semi-final, the Croatian's second in Melbourne and his fifth overall (2-2).

Seeing a quarterfinals run at last year's French Open and then a runner-up finish at Wimbledon, the world No. 6 ought to crack the top three if he can keep up this pace.

"Everywhere we play people enjoy it".

Cilic awaits the Friday victor between Roger Federer and the surprising 21-year-old Hyeon Chung.

Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have dominated the men's finals since 2009, with only 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka breaking the quartet's court occupation in the championship match.

The world No1's Australian Open campaign was abruptly ended on Tuesday night when he was trailing Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 2-0 in their quarter-final on Rod Laver Arena.

But the 23-year-old is trying to shut out all the buzz and focus on extending his wonderful run in Melbourne. "He's one of the best players the past couple of years but Rafa is going to be tough for him". Plays great on the hard courts.

"I think that was one reason why Rafa also slowed down his first serve back in the day to actually nearly get a rally to get a rhythm so then on the return game he could create something through his service games for the returning".

"With these sort of things, you're emotionally engaged and you don't take it in".

"I'm going to focus on myself".

"The thing for Cilic is to get one when you are down break point if you have done it so many times". I am a positive person, and I can be positive, but today is an opportunity lost to be in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam and fight for an important title for me.

Kyle Edmund suffers a straight-sets defeat to Marin Cilic, who remains on course for a first triumph at the Australian Open after reaching the final.

Not since John Lloyd in 1977 has anyone but Murray achieved the feat. Diego Schwartzman, 15-year-old Marta Kostyuk, Hsieh Su-Wei are some players who made their mark in the tournament.
