At the announcement, Beckham admitted that bringing soccer to Miami wasn't easy and there were times he nearly gave up.

David Beckham's long-awaited Major League Soccer team finally has the green light to begin play in Miami.

Beckham exercised his option for a franchise and the team would be based in Miami assuming that financing for a stadium and its location in the city could be agreed upon.

While no details of the franchise have been given, it would appear that solutions to outstanding problems have been found and Miami will be announced as the competition's 25th team at the city's Adrienne Arsht Center. Speak your thoughts on the news and keep it locked for much more on this coming soon.

They also said the team might have to play its first season in a temporary stadium, possibly Marlins Park, home of the Miami Marlins MLB team, or the Florida International University (FIU) Stadium. Recently, while Beckham's group wrangled with politicians, second-tier Miami FC, co-owned by the Italian legend Paolo Maldini, has come to the fore. At some point, I think, it would make sense for a team in Miami.

"People say this is a city that is built on dreams".

"Bringing an MLS club to Miami has been a hell of a journey", said Beckham.

"I joined the Galaxy in 2007 because I realised the long-term potential of this league", the 42-year-old said.

"If it wasn't for David, Jorge, and Jose we wouldn't be here today", he reiterated. "We owe the commissioner and the owners a debt of gratitude and I promise the team we bring in will be one of the best teams - the best team".

Miami had been without an MLS team since the short-lived Miami Fusion, which existed from 1997 until 2001. "We have a world-class ownership group that includes one of the hottest brands in all of sports, the strongest possible local partner, an entertainment guru, two sports franchise owners, and one of the world's leading global technology entrepreneurs", said Claure. Marcelo Claure is the CEO of United States mobile network Sprint, while the SoftBank founder and CEO, Masayoshi Son, joins the Mas brothers.

"The way of teaching them is by saying it's not all smooth sailing, there's going to be hard times, it's just how you react when you go through hard times", he added.

An MLS statement said information about the team's debut season, team name, logo and staff would be released in the future.
