Lundgren, who assumed post in December with an annual salary of 740,000 pounds (843,000 euros), will charge 34,000 pounds (39,000 euros) a year less, to equate his salary to that of his predecessor in office, Carolyn McCall.

The former TUI Group executive made the decision to request a salary reduction amid a number of high-profile news stories in the United Kingdom regarding gender pay imbalance.

The decision of top executive of low-priced airline occurs days after six BBC star presenters also chose to reduce ir salaries to combat wage gap in Public Broadcasting Corporation, which summer Past made public wages of best-paid presenters.

"At EasyJet we are absolutely committed to giving equal pay and equal opportunity for women and men", Lundgren said in the release. This is driven not by unequal pay for women at easyJet but by the massive gender imbalance in our, and the aviation industry's, pilot community.

According to a FlightGlobal survey, her departure leaves just two female chief executives at top-100 airline groups: Usanee Sangsingkaew is acting president of Thai Airways International, while Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao is chief executive of VietJet Air. In fact, over a third of easyJet's female pilots are already Captains.

"I also want to affirm my own commitment to address the gender imbalance in our pilot community which drives our overall gender pay gap", Lundgren said in today's statement.

But we recognise we need to do better.

The carrier has also "set a target that 20% of new pilots should be female by 2020, up from 6% in 2015", reports the BBC. It said it recruited 49 women pilots in 2017, an increase of 48% over the previous year.

EasyJet says that salaries for pilots and cabin crew are collectively agreed, and it pays men and women the same amount for the same work.

The boss of easyJet will take a salary cut to demonstrate his "personal commitment" to equal pay.
