FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe stepping down from post

The briefing will likely focus on the "removal" of Deputy Director of the FBI Andrew McCabe following months of scandals and controversies surrounding his role in the Trump-Russia investigation as well as his longtime connections to the Democratic party.

Sanders's comments came just after news surfaced that sources indicated said McCabe was forced out of his position.

The Republican president also blasted McCabe for his wife, Jill McCabe, who had previously run as a Democrat for a seat in Virginia's state Senate and received donations from then-Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, a close ally of Clinton.

Trump also reportedly summoned McCabe to his office in May, shortly after he had fired FBI Director James Comey, to ask him whom he voted for in the 2016 elections, The Washington Post reported last week. He became deputy director under former FBI Director James Comey, who President Donald Trump fired last May.

McCabe was under considerable scrutiny from Republicans, as special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling and any ties to Trump associates continued.

Mr McCabe has become a target of Republican politicians and the Republican president in connection with the FBI's investigation into Mrs Clinton's use of a private email server while she served as U.S. secretary of state.

McCabe has been lashed out at by Republican lawmakers alleging systemic bias against the president the top tier of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Republicans charge that an anti-Trump bias exists in the bureau's ranks, citing the campaign donations to McCabe's wife and, more recently, the release of hundreds of text messages between FBI counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder tweeted Monday that McCabe "is, and has been, a dedicated public servant who has served this country well".

A handful of Republican-led congressional committees have launched inquiries into whether the FBI botched the Clinton investigation and showed bias in her favour. In December, McCabe was grilled behind closed doors by lawmakers on several of those panels for hours.

"He had enough of being undermined and criticized", this source said.
