Netanyahu warns Putin: Israel ready to act against Iran
31 January 2018, 07:30 | Rufus Hill
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday that if Iran continues to try and entrench itself in Syria, Israel will "stop it". Netanyahu said he told the Russian president about his concerns of "Iranian attempts to create military bases in Syria", and of Tehran's alleged attempts to place "high-precision weapons" in Lebanon to target Israel.
Also on the agenda, Netanyahu said, is "Iran's relentless efforts to establish a military presence in Syria, which we strongly oppose and are also taking action against".
Netanyahu was accompanied by Minister Ze'ev Elkin, a member of the security cabinet who is considered to have close ties with Russian officials as well as National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and outgoing Military Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Ronen Manelis, posted a rare op-ed on Sunday on several Arabic-language websites, warning Lebanon of Iran's entrenchment and saying Israel is "prepared for all the scenarios". Their last meeting was held at the end of August, 2017. The upcoming meeting for Monday between Putin and Netanyahu was previously discussed over a telephonic conversation on New Year's day.
"There needs to be a long-term and fair solution that fulfills the interests of both sides, and complies with previous stances of the worldwide community", Putin told reporters in December.
Netanyahu said he and Putin talked about various "scenarios of escalation" in the region, and how they can be dealt with.
Netanyahu stated that Iran is to blame for attempting to change the status quo both in Syria and Lebanon.
"After the [two's] meeting, President Putin presented Prime Minister Netanyahu with a gift".

"That is our mission today as well". Netanyahu and Putin will be participating at the Centre to mark the memory of Holocaust victims and Leningrad's liberation anniversary.
