Apple Working On Three New Macs With Custom Co-Processors This Year

Apple may release at least three Macs with custom co-processors in 2018, but which ones?

2018 Apple roadmap leak tips more custom Mac chips

Right now, only the Touch Bar-based laptops and the iMac Pro have Apple's own silicon, but this year will feature at least three more machines, including updated laptops and a desktop, with Apple's own co-processors the report says.

A new report from Bloomberg's often-reliable Mark Gurman indicates that Apple is planning to release three Macs with new internal hardware by the end of the year. Steve Jobs himself thought that Apple products shouldn't have a mixture of chips inside from various companies, such as Samsung and Intel, but instead consist of their own technologies.

These co-processors are, like those before them, likely to be ARM-based chips that carry out specific functions for Mac computers.

Apple added its second-generation custom processor, the T2, to its iMac Pro previous year. Another report today claims Apple is slowing its roll-out of new iOS features in 2018 as it deals with reliability issues, so security - something the company has long touted compared to systems without its "walled garden" approach - is receiving greater attention in Cupertino. After all, the company doesn't introduce new features to the computers all that often; and this may be too soon to expect something completely revolutionary.

Apple's custom processors already outperform many of its rivals, but it's unlikely that the tech giant could just quit using Intel's chips anytime soon, the Verge noted. By designing and developing chips for its own products, Apple doesn't have to rely on third party manufacturers thereby saving costs, time and making way for better user experience. The co-processors are used to control the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro, while they handle power management and security on the iMac Pro.
