London health officials report five flu deaths in one week

“Canine flu is currently experiencing intense flare-ups in defined geographic locations,” Amy Glaser director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at Cornell’s Animal Health Diagnostic Center told Time

The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed 37 Georgians have died of flu-related complications so far this season.

"So, for that two to three days when people are the most sick, they're pretty wiped out, but that's when you're the most contagious", he said.

Those who have not yet received a flu shot this season are encouraged to do so, since flu activity can last as late as May.

This year the flu is hitting older Georgians especially hard. The CDC IFI surveillance has shown that, for our region, January is typically the peak time for flu activity. "Our county health department clinics are providing flu vaccines at no charge to patients until vaccine supplies are depleted".

"Yes, it is still recommended to get a flu shot", Johnson said.

This year's vaccine is not considered as effective as it should be.

The H3N2 strain of the influenza virus is what most people are being affected by, which causes more (and worse) cases and more visits to the doctor, according to the CDC.

"I strongly urge everyone who is able to get a flu shot to protect themselves and those around them." said Leigh-Anne Stafford, health officer for the Oakland County Health Division, in a news release.

The flu is "impacting our entire health care community including all emergency rooms and outpatient care facilities", said Steve Shelton, emergency room physician and Palmetto Health medical director of Emergency Management. They ask anyone who was touched by Sydney in her short life to please attend and say goodbye with them. Both quadrivalent and high dose influenza vaccines will be available.

Her family will hold a funeral service at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Prospect Baptist Church in Anderson.

While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. Anyone feeling sick is also advised to stay home and cover their mouth when coughing and sneezing.

Wash your hands often with soap and water. "If you're coughing, make sure you're coughing into a tissue, your elbow and really good hand-washing".

For schools, clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces such as desks, door handles, keyboards, etc.
